June Delay

robybang May 30th, 2013, 12:07 am

Because of an unforseen family emergency, it seems unlikely that I'll be able to reboot the comic this month. It's hard to give an updated deadline at this point as everything is up in the air and I'm spending very little time on the internet because of it, but I'll give some general timeline when I get more information.

On the third day, he rose again...

I started work on the script back in January, but after working through some writer's block, I finally have the first part of the script written. An Easter miracle. Now that I have a better idea of what the story will be, I can tell you what it won't be. Major was originally going to be an explorer trained by a company that accidentally was sent to work as a miner on another planet, but would eventually escape and get stuck on another planet. I got stuck on the writing because being an explorer would make him sound brave and heroic when that wasn't what I was going for. But after changing his expected and assigned jobs, everything clicked. I should be able to start drawing the comic and have a buffer set up by June.

Update on T-Minus

robybang December 17th, 2012, 11:56 pm

So it's almost been six months since I put the comic on hiatus. I promised I'd keep you guys posted on any developments on the comic, and now seems as good a time as any. I have a few concept sketches, I've read some science-fiction, absurdist, and comic theory works to hone some of the ideas I wanted from the original comic, and I've had story ideas run through my head, but over sixth months they've changed multiple times over. I'm trying to learn from the problems of the first incarnation by not jumping onto a concept so quickly and not thinking the logistics of it, but I'm worried that I'm overcorrecting by not making anything at all. I've joked in the forums that I'm starting to be like the hipster who talks shop about screenwriting in Starbucks but doesn't actually write anything, and it's not far from the truth.

Despite my indecision, I can tell you some definite things about the new T-Minus (if I ever make it). The story will no longer take place on the moon in the 21th century. It will still be comedic, but won't be a gag-a-day. There will be more characters than the Major and Rover. There will be space travel and aliens. The story won't be part of the same universe as the original T-Minus. And pages won't be restricted to 3-4 panels. If I need a panel or a whole page to tell the story, then I won't try to force it to fit a weekly newspaper format. But I like Rover and Major, so even if I decide to give them different names or character designs, they'll still have similar personalities. I'd like to start work on it next year, but if that doesn't happen, I'll post something here in the future.

I don't really want to do this, but for the longest time, I haven't been too happy with the direction the strip is heading. Because of the update schedule the newspaper this goes into, I have very little time to do any long reaching plotlines. As a result, I resigned myself to gag-a-day style strips, but the pressure to make a new gag every update without any sort of direction has drained some of the heady philosophical nature the comic started with. I don't blame them for their schedule and format; it would be egotistical to demand they publish more frequently to accommodate my storytelling needs. At any rate, I'm going to just give them what I have left and quit.

As for the comic, I plan to spend the time off tweaking the art style, doing research, and coming up with a long running plot with several scripts made ahead of time. If anything comes up, I'll post it in the News section.
